Tufa Habitats / Gnáthóga Tufa

In 2021, with the support of The Community Water Fund 2021, the EPA, the NPWS and Ballina Muncipal Council we commissioned Denyer Ecology to perform a conservation assessment of springs in the Moy Estuary which were only identified as petrifying springs in January 2021.

In 2021, le tacaíocht ón gCiste Uisce Pobail 2021, an EPA, an NPWS agus Comhairle Bhardais Bhéal an Átha, choimisiúnaíomar Denyer Ecology chun measúnú caomhnaithe a dhéanamh ar spriongaí in Inbhear na Muaidhe nár sainaithníodh ach mar spriongaí uafásacha i mí Eanáir 2021.

This assessment was performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines.

On November 9th 2022, in conjunction with the NPWS, the EPA, the Local Authority Waters Programme, Clean Coasts, Cunningham Civil & Marine Ltd and Denyer Ecology, we freed up a petrifying stream adjacent to the Old Quay School F26 EW63 from decades of scrub, allowing it a chance to create new tufa habitat biodiversity. Funding was received from the NPWS, the Local Authority Waters Programme Community Water Fund 2022 and Clean Coasts. The EPA tested the water samples.

Ar an 9 Samhain 2022, i gcomhar leis an NPWS, an EPA, Clár Uiscí na nÚdarás Áitiúil, Cóstaí Glana, Cunningham Civil & Marine Ltd. agus Denyer Ecology, d’fhuascaileamar sruth millteach in aice le Scoil na Seanchéanna F26 EW63 ó scór bliain de scrobarnach, rud a thugann deis dó bithéagsúlacht ghnáthóg tufa nua a chruthú. Fuarthas maoiniú ón tSeirbhís Páirceanna Náisiúnta agus Fiadhúlra, Ciste Uisce Pobail Chlár Uiscí na nÚdarás Áitiúil 2022 agus Cóstaí Glana. Rinne an EPA tástáil ar na samplaí uisce.

Photograph: This spring well located here is a generational old source of drinking water for the community.

Photograph: At the end of the day the petrifying stream was uncovered and now has a chance to reinvigorate the tufa habitats there. This is, we believe, the largest tufa habitat in Connaught.
